34 LEGO sets gaan op 31 december uit productie: wat dat betekent voor je cadeaulijst

34 LEGO sets to be discontinued on December 31st: what that means for your gift list

On September 29, Video Games Chronicle reported that 34 LEGO sets from the video game themes will be discontinued on December 31, 2026. The site bases this on retirement tracking by Brick Fanatics, not on an announcement from the LEGO Group itself.

We prefer to make that distinction clear immediately: this is a well-founded expectation from the fan press, not an official end date published by LEGO. Anyone reading the list at Video Games Chronicle will see how concrete it is, complete with set numbers.

Which themes are on the list

It involves sets from Minecraft, Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario, Animal Crossing, Fortnite, and Horizon, plus the Arcade Machine (set 40805). Minecraft makes up the largest chunk of the list. Named specifically in the article: 21279 The Enderman Tower, 77006 Team Sonic Command Truck, 71440 Adventures with Interactive LEGO Luigi, 77053 Stargazing with Celeste, and 77037 Aloy & Varl vs Shell-Walker & Sawtooth.

These are not obscure boxes. They are exactly the themes people reach for when they know what a child likes to play.

Discontinued is not the same as sold out

This is often confused, so let’s be clear. When a set is discontinued, LEGO stops producing new copies. Nothing disappears from the shelves on January 1st. Whatever is still there, at LEGO and in stores, is what remains. After that, it gradually becomes more difficult to find a copy, and that happens much faster for some sets than others.

What we aren't going to speculate about: how much stock is left or what a set might be worth later. Nobody knows that today, including us.

Why December 31 matters here

Most gift deadlines are vague. This one isn't. With St. Nicholas Day on December 6 and Christmas following shortly after, the entire gift-giving season falls before December 31, and that is exactly the point of this news: you don't need to know anything about the LEGO calendar to understand that you’d better not wait until February if you have one of these sets in mind.

Conversely: don't panic. New sets are added to these themes every year. A Minecraft fan or a Mario fan can still be pleased next year.

How to choose without going through the whole list

Start with the person, not the list.

  • Which game do they really play? That is the only question that matters. A Minecraft builder is happy with Minecraft, not Sonic.
  • Which age? The box says so, and in our Giftfinder, you can filter by it immediately.
  • Which budget? Determine that first, and your choice will naturally narrow down to a handful of options instead of dozens.
  • When does it need to arrive? With us, everything is shipped from our own stock, with a delivery time of 1 to 4 days. Shipping to Belgium is free for orders over 150 EUR.

What we can do for you

The gap that this news leaves is not the date. It is the choice. A list of 34 sets doesn't tell you which one fits the person you are looking for.

For that, there is our Giftfinder: filter by age, theme, and budget, and you'll end up with a few options instead of a news report. If you are really in doubt, there is the Brick Present gift card, so the recipient can choose for themselves. And in addition to our current assortment, we also have sets that LEGO has long since stopped producing, because that is exactly what we are good at.
